Permit Guide

Camping Permits in India

India has no single national camping law. Regulations vary by state and terrain type. Reserved forests need DFO permission, national parks need Chief Wildlife Warden approval, and beach camping is restricted within 500m of the high-tide line under CRZ Rules 2019.

General Rules

  • Indian Forest Act 1927 — camping in reserved forests requires District Forest Officer permission
  • Wildlife Protection Act 1972 — no camping in national parks/sanctuaries without Chief Wildlife Warden approval
  • CRZ Rules 2019 — no camping within 500m of high-tide line on beaches
  • Forest camping fees typically ₹50–500 per person per night
  • Many popular campsites (Triund, Rishikesh, Pawna Lake) are permit-free
